Founded and owned by two recovered addicts Nate Roberts and Chris Leston, City Mountain Design is an apparel line that does more than just produce clothes. City Mountain Design was born out of the idea that the people find meaning through their ability to be vulnerable and expose themselves. Nate and Chris hope to inspire others to pursue their passions, to channel their energies in creative avenues that grant them a sense of oneness and connectedness with others.
After finding themselves supplanted in the foothills of the mountains of New Hampshire from the suburbs of Massachusetts, Nate and Chris connected over their shared passion for creating art as a method of self-expression and exploration. Together they owned a studio in New Hampshire where they would delve into different avenues of artistic expression. Together, they found that the more they were able to express themselves creatively the more comfortable they became in life and with other people.
They describe themselves as purists, preferring to build their own canvases; everything from constructing the frames, stretching the canvas and mixing their own gesso. This makes the entire process deliberate, unique and meditative.
City Mountain Design’s ultimate passion however, graffiti – or painting on walls as they casually refer to it. These days they only install legal wall art in the small town of New Hampshire that they call home. After ditching the city the guys assumed their days of spray painting walls had come to an end. As fate would have it though, they happened upon eight walls donated to their town that they are able to paint murals on, effectively bringing the city into the mountains.
Chris and Nate were constantly seeking avenues in which they would be able to share their work with others. The two are of the belief that while there will always be critics of what you are creating in this world, you will also find people to love, support and further inspire you. After coming across an article about a company in Canada selling T-shirts featuring subway sign prints by independent artists, they were struck with the idea that they could create graphics of their artwork to share with people on a larger scale then they had been able to.
They began tossing ideas around with for a name and with fierce determination, took on the arduous task of teaching themselves adobe illustrator to create graphics and began the process of creating a website that would be able to host a print on demand store for their company. After three months, City Mountain Design was launched in October of 2017. Their products range from tank tops to sweatshirts and snapbacks to beanies, sticking true to their name; they provide apparel to those roaming the city or the mountains.
