Supporting Families

Accessing Treatment

We know the cost of treatment can be a barrier to care. The Family Restored raises funds to help make treatment possible. If you are struggling with addiction and lack the funds necessary to access treatment or sober living, please consider applying for a scholarship.

About The Family Restored

The Family Restored (TFR) began in 2011 in Portland, Maine when a small group of people in recovery started a support meeting to help families understand and cope with their loved one’s addiction. This group knew from experience how their addiction had hurt their families and loved ones. As facilitators they offered a unique perspective to educate, inform, and inspire hope for families.

During the course of the support meetings, facilitators heard families speak repeatedly about one daunting challenge – how to pay for treatment. While families were eager to support their loved ones through their treatment and recovery, families often did not have the financial resources to pay for care and treatment. Consequently, many people struggling with addiction who desired treatment could not get the care they desperately sought and needed. Witnessing the families’ dedication and commitment to improving the health and well being of their loved ones, several of the facilitators were inspired to make a difference.

They had an idea –  establish a scholarship fund to help families pay the treatment and recovery housing costs for their loved one. They believed lives could be restored with access to treatment. They knew recovery was possible. They saw it happening on a daily basis. In 2014, they created and launched The Family Restored.

Believing recovery is possible, our mission is to strengthen and support families affected by addiction.

The founders of The Family Restored have personal experience with the model of 12-step, abstinence-based recovery. We are passionate about 12-step recovery because it worked for us. As a result, our programming and financial support is focused on 12-step-based resources that we feel that we can accurately assess.

We understand there are many pathways that meet the diverse needs of those suffering from substance use disorder. While we focus on 12-step, abstinence-based recovery at TFR, we fully embrace the freedom for people to choose their own treatment pathway. We are allies to all in recovery.

We believe that recovery is possible—and everyone should have access to the help they need. While Medicated Assisted Treatment (MAT) is highly regarded by many people, for some people MAT treats the symptoms, but not the core of what’s happening. For those people, MAT doesn’t do enough to heal the issue.

The Family Restored does not partner with MAT recovery residences at this time. The recovery residences we support are peer-support based, managed by people in recovery, not medical professionals. We do not believe it is safe or fair to ask another peer to monitor addictive substances. For those seeking MAT support, we will help connect you with possible resources and houses that are experts in that pathway.

The Family Restored does not recommend or determine how or whether someone should take their medication. We are not medical doctors; we are one avenue for recovery support. Our treatment partners make decisions about medications in partnership with their patients. For anyone who desires to stop taking any medication, we connect them to detox centers to safely transition.

We do not directly facilitate treatment for co-occurring conditions. TFR is focused on recovery from addiction. We understand that addiction can often co-occur with mental health disorders or even physical impairments. Some of our treatment partners have mental health staff and medical providers onsite, others can refer helpful resources.

Man in hat looking out at the water

“The Family Restored scholarship gave me an opportunity that I otherwise would not have had. As well as an introduction to a solution that I have sought after for many years. My daughter has the father she so desperately needs, my parents the son they deserve, and my friends and family have someone they can depend on.”
